What's on in Barcelona, Events Guide April 2009

Barcelona events listings provided by www.athome-barcelona.com
Barcelona apartments for rent in the city centre. Our apartment rentals are perfect for your self-catering holiday in Barcelona.

April appears to be a little quieter than usual for live music, with not as many big names visiting as there were last month. Nonetheless, there should be something that grabs your attention from a list that includes Kokolo Afrobeat Orchestra, D.O.A., Mando Diao, Supersuckers, Il Divo, Kamelot, US3, Antony & the Johnsons, David Byrne, Tote King, and Laura Pausini. As usual, you can check out dates, times, and prices over at www.barcelonarocks.com

Showing until mid May at the CCCB is an exhibition entitled Illuminaciones: Visionary Catalunya, an historical journey through Barcelona's role as a cultural hub in Europe, and how the rest of world perceives Catalunya. Different themes are explored here, from Dali and art to society and political history, including the important role played by Catalunya during the Spanish Civil War.

Also showing at CCCB is the 7th African Photo Exhibition, presenting an overview of contemporary African photography, and showcasing the importance of the Rencontres Africaines de la Photographie, a biennial event which, after seven outings, is now consolidated as one of Africa’s biggest artistic meeting points. The exhibition entitled In The City and Beyond focuses on the theme of urban phenomenon with a realisation that cities are, fundamentally, networks of material and immaterial relations – between individuals and social groups. Included among approximately 150 photographs, is a tribute to leading African photographer, the late Serge Jongué, a monograph given over entirely to Samuel Fosso, and a selection of the original videos submitted in the New Images zone. Their site www.cccb.org is also in English.

Next door at MACBA you'll find the exhibition I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore by Thomas Bayrle, considered to be one of the leading representatives of the reception of the Pop movement in Germany. According to MACBA's own release -'The importance of formulating a new phenomenology of the experience of historical time is the core of Thomas Bayrle's work, as well as of this project, especially created for the MACBA. This is a fundamental subject in the context of an institution in which the interest in the temporary, in the history of art and the collective memory coexist with the desire to maintain the currency of a commitment to understand and seize the meaning of living in and from the present.'- The exhibition will remain open until April 19th. Visit www.macba.es for more information.

The new exhibition at Casa Asia gathers a range of images documenting the historic period in China from 1949 to present day. A collection of photographic recordings that have been preserved throughout the years despite the adverse conditions that have threatened their loss, which makes the pictures even more beautiful through their rarity and uniqueness. Key moments in the country’s history and the daily lives of its people serve as a microcosm for the strife and conflict in the entire country. Alongside you can view an unedited film trilogy entitled China: a Century of Revolution, which includes screenings of China in Revolution 1911-1949, The Mao Years 1949-1976 and Born Under The Red Flag 1976-1997. For more information, visit www.casaasia.es

Continuing at Fundació Arqueològica Clos, Barcelona's Egyptian Museum, until the end of June is Sick Skeletons. With over 130 skeletons and human remains, this exhibition shows the wide range of illnesses and ailments suffered by our ancestors, and brings together artefacts from over 30 institutions from around the world which span a timeline from prehistory to relatively modern times. Congenital and degenerative disorders, infections, tumours, and traumas and injuries caused by violence, among other things, are all explored here.

Over at the Casa Amèrica Catalunya the 50th anniversary of the Cuban revolution is being marked by an exhibition entitled Cuba Mía which leads viewers through the early years of Castro's regime, and features 80 black-and-white photographs taken in 1964 by the Mexican photographer Rodrigo Moya. This is the first time such images have been shown to the public and they include a dozen photographs taken of Ernesto Che Guevara in his office when he was Minister of Industry.

The Giggling Guiri moves back to the delightfully intimate Cafe Teatre Llantiol with a show tailor-made for Barcelona entitled Divide and Conga featuring the singular talents of John Gordillo. He performs on the 25th, doors open at 9.30pm, and as usual you can be certain that tickets for this are going to sell out well before the event, so book in advance to avoid disappointment. Visit www.comedyinspain.com for prices and curtain times.

With just 10 games to go, the pressure is on in La Liga, with FC Barcelona's lead over rivals Real Madrid now 6 points. They have two home games in the league, against Recreativo de Huelva on the 12th and Sevilla on the 22nd, but before that they will face German side Bayern Munich in the Champions League on the 8th. At the other end of the table, RCD Espanyol will have to perform some kind of miracle if they are to avoid relegation. Again. Although it would be a foolish man that wrote off the Pericos, they are now bottom and 7 pts behind Osasuna in 18th, and must take maximum points in at least two of their three home games this month, against Deportivo de la Coruña on the 5th, Racing Santander on the 19th, and Real Betis on the 26th.

The contents of this feed may be used by anyone, but a link back to www.athome-barcelona.com would be nice. Should anyone have any event they feel is worth including, please contact us at marketing at athome-barcelona dot com and we will be happy to oblige.
